Berlin considers that leaders of the Russian Federation and Turkey Vladimir Putin and Tayyip Erdogan at a meeting on March, 5th should define a zone in Idlib where the humanitarian aid to civilians will be rendered, the deputy official representative of the Cabinet of Germany Ulrike Demmer has declared.
The meeting of Presidents of Russia and Turkey will go on 5 March in Moscow. Earlier the Kremlin reported that it is planned to discuss settlement issues in Syria, taking into account the aggravation of de-escalation in Idlib zone.
“When Presidents Putin and Erdogan talk about Idlib tomorrow, they should also define in the discussion an area where they can provide assistance to internally displaced persons”, – Demmer said at a briefing on Wednesday.
She explained that “safe and effective” access for humanitarian organizations to the zone should be guaranteed.
“Chancellor (Angela) Merkel raised this issue in telephone conversations with Putin and Erdogan. It is now Putin’s and Erdogan’s task to identify such an area, and we will take that into account”, – added Demmer.
Answering the question whether the bilateral meeting between Putin and Erdogan will be followed by a quadripartite meeting between the leaders of Germany and France, Demmer said that “the government is ready for negotiations as a matter of principle, this is a very important topic”, – but we have to wait for the results of the Russian-Turkish negotiations.
