The flow of people leaving Idlib Syria has increased in recent days, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi told.
“We know that in the province of Idlib in the north of the country (Syria) about 900,000 people have been displaced in the past few months, say, but this has accelerated over the past few days”, – Grandi told Riyadh at the 2nd International Humanitarian Forum.
The situation in Idlib escalated after Hayat Tahrir al-Sham terrorists launched a large-scale attack on Syrian Government positions on 27 February. The SAR army returned fire. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the shelling included Turkish soldiers who should not have been there.
As a result, 33 soldiers of the Turkish army were killed and more than 30 wounded. Immediately after receiving information about the Turkish military casualties, the Russian side took measures for a complete ceasefire by Syrian troops, and safe evacuation of the dead and wounded Turkish soldiers to Turkey was ensured. The Russian Ministry of Defense stressed that the aviation of the Russian Air Force was not used in the area.
After the situation in Idlib in Syria escalated, Turkey said it could no longer contain the flow of migrants and refugees, and opened its borders with the EU, after which thousands of migrants rushed to Greece. In three days, about 20 thousand attempts to violate the border, where hundreds of police officers are located, were stopped, and Greek army units were tightened. During the first day 66 migrants were arrested, who entered the Greek territory, for the second day – 73 illegal immigrants.
