In Bosnia and Herzegovina, up to 10,000 migrants per day are expected

The head of the International Organization for Migration mission in BiH, Peter van der Everrt, warned that Croatia was strengthening its border control, so that up to 10,000 migrants could be expected in BiH.

He believes that the decision cannot come from BiH as the country’s possibilities are already strained and that it is necessary to work with the EU to find alternatives.

Van der Everert stressed that a common solution must be found for the EU and the Western Balkans, as there are more borders that migrants cross before arriving in BiH.

He said that the BiH authorities have announced the strengthening of border controls, which he called part of the legal solution.

On the occasion of an emergency meeting convened in Brussels for EU member states about a possible crisis, Van der Everert said he plans to discuss ways to strengthen controls and slow down the arrival of migrants.

When asked whether EU funds would be diverted to prevent illegal crossings in the event of a large wave of migrants, he stressed that humanitarian and security financing should be distinguished.

Regarding the increase of European funds for border security, Van der Everert said that there was a desire to increase support, but this was a matter of negotiations between the authorities of BiH and the EU or other donors.

He noted that there is a desire on the part of the international community to improve the security management system for migrants, but it is important that BiH has a government plan that will determine how much money is needed for a particular area.
