Grenades, tear gas, and unknown chemicals were launched.
Thousands of refugees from the Middle East took advantage of the opportunity offered to them by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Now Ankara is not holding back migrants on its territory, and more than seven thousand people have rushed to the border with Greece.
According to local media, the Greek military has already blocked the bridge over the Evros River, which runs along the border. But this did not stop the refugees. Tensions are added by the actions of Turkish border guards. According to the ERT radio station, they periodically open fire in the air to wreak havoc on a crowd of migrants and force them to storm Greece’s border more actively.
The result was a fierce confrontation between refugees and Greek law enforcement officers. The siloviki have already launched light-noise grenades and tear gas, hoping to disperse the crowd. In response, migrants bombarded the police with unknown chemicals.
Residents of the bordering Greek city of Castanee claim that Athens could send more law and order to the region. They call on the authorities to transfer troops and special equipment here to strengthen the border.
As News Front previously reported, amid escalating tensions in Syrian Idlib, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan opened the country’s northwestern border for refugees, allowing them to move to EU countries. In this regard, the Permanent Mission of Greece to NATO vetoed the Alliance’s statement of support for Turkey.
