52 police officers and 10 protesters were injured on Wednesday in the biggest clashes in Lesbos and Chios against the establishment of new closed migrant camps.
The main protests occurred in the area of Diavolorema, Cavali and Carawa in Lesbos, where the Government is expropriating land to build camps. During the clashes, local residents threw stones at the police, who responded with tear gas, injuring over 40 police officers and 10 islanders.
In Chios, locals invaded a hotel near the construction site of the new camp and wounded eight officers who were there.
In Athens, the Minister of Migration, Notis Mitarakis, called for calm, noting that the islanders’ mistrust of any government announcement “is largely justified”.
