Candidate for CDU leader called for EU-Russia rapprochement

Friedrich Mertz believes that without Moscow there will be no political stability in Europe in the long run.

German Christian Democratic Union (CDU) candidate Friedrich Mertz called on the EU and Germany to cooperate more closely with Russia. He outlined the corresponding position, speaking to the classmates in the city of Apolda (Thuringia), said Thursday portal Finanzen.net.

“Russia is currently making this very, very difficult”, –  Mertz said. However, he said that without Moscow there would be no political stability in Europe in the long run.

“Germany and Europe must meet Russia and try to find a way to make the 21st century more connected”, –  the politician said.

In late April, the CDU will choose a new leader at an extraordinary congress. Maertz is considered one of the favorites in the struggle for this post.
