Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad resigned on Monday. This was stated in a statement issued by the administration of the head of government.
“A corresponding petition has been sent to the Supreme Ruler (King) of Malaysia,” the message reads. Other details are not yet disclosed.
Shortly before that, the United Party of the Sons of the Land of Malaysia, headed by Mahatheer, resigned from the ruling coalition “Alliance of Hope”.
This political structure was established in 2017 and united four opposition parties. At the same time, it was agreed that if Mahathir won the parliamentary elections in May 2018, he would be prime minister for only two years and then hand the post over to Anvar Ibrahim as leader of the largest party in the bloc.
This scenario was explained by the 71-year-old Anvar’s time in prison, where he was serving a five-year sentence on charges of sodomy, which is considered a serious crime under the laws of Muslim Malaysia. After the victory of the Alliance of Hope, the Supreme Ruler pardoned Anwar with an opportunity to hold public office. However, 94-year-old Mahathir recently said he intends to transfer power only after the APEC summit in November 2020.
