Suspects are in custody.
The Dominican authorities have admitted that the local elections that were to have been held in the country last Sunday were disrupted by sabotage. This was reported in the newspaper El Nacional on Thursday.
It is noted that the Office of the Attorney General is investigating a colonel and a technical officer who runs the electronic voting system, due to serious setbacks in which the voting had to be postponed until 15 March. Both suspects of sabotage have been detained.
The opposition, meanwhile, is organizing a protest outside the country’s CEC, one of the most large-scale demonstrations scheduled for 23 February. Representatives of 14 opposition parties in the Dominican Republic insist on an emergency meeting with the CEC members.
On Sunday, a total of about 7.5 million Dominicans in 158 Dominican municipalities were to elect mayors and vice mayors for four years. Their inauguration is scheduled for April 24. Two hours after the opening of the polling stations, the head of the CEC of the Republic, Julio Cesar Castañoz Guzmán, announced the suspension of the voting process due to technical problems in the electronic processing of ballots.
