Erdogan had a phone conversation with Macron and Merkel about the situation in Idlib

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan discussed by phone with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel the situation in Syrian Idlib, stressed the need to stop the attacks of the Syrian army, the Turkish presidential administration said in a statement.

“Our President had a three-way phone conversation with Macron and Merkel. According to him, the aggression of the Syrian regime and its supporters in Idlib should be stopped. The President stressed that in order to prevent the humanitarian crisis it is necessary to provide strong support with concrete actions”, –  the report says.

It was noted that Erdogan expressed condolences for the terrorist attack in German Hanau and condemned the attack based on xenophobia and discrimination against Muslims.

The interlocutors also discussed the situation in Libya.

Earlier Erdogan stated that Turkey has not yet received a satisfactory result in negotiations with Russia on Syrian Idlib and is ready to start a military operation in the region. The spokesman for the Russian President Dmitry Peskov called it the worst scenario.

Erdogan said earlier that he called on his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to put pressure on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to stop the Syrian army offensive in the province of Idlib and withdraw from the Turkish observation points by the end of February, threatening otherwise with a military response.
