Al-Shabaab militants attacked a bus in north-eastern Kenya, killing three people and injuring five, Citizen TV Kenya reported.

Armed men are said to have attacked a bus on Wednesday that was heading for Kenya’s capital, Nairobi. The attack took place in the Mandera district, on the border with Somalia. The channel notes that one of the victims is a bus driver and that many passengers fled the scene.

Militants, the channel adds, have increased the rate of attacks since early January.

The radical Islamist group Al-Shabaab (“Young Mujahedeen Movement”), which has close ties to the international terrorist organisation al-Qaeda*, is based in Somalia. It is engaged in armed struggle against the central government of Somalia and impedes UN humanitarian activities, terrorists of the group also commit attacks in neighboring Kenya. The group was listed by the US as a terrorist organization in 2008 and is subject to sanctions in the country.
