Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov urged not to consider the summit of the “five” permanent members of the UN Security Council proposed by the Russian president as a closed club of selected countries.
This statement was made by the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry during a roundtable on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.
“A few weeks ago, President Putin in Jerusalem proposed to think about the summit of the “five” permanent members of the UN Security Council, not because it is some kind of closed club where only selected countries gather, but because according to the UN charter, which is still relevant, these countries have a special responsibility for everything that happens in the field of world stability and security”, – Lavrov said.
At the same time, he recalled that Russia’s proposal “remains on the table”.
Earlier, Vladimir Putin, in his speech at the Fifth World Holocaust Forum, proposed organizing a meeting of leaders of the countries of the permanent members of the Security Council – Russia, China, the United States, France and the United Kingdom.
He said that Moscow intends, “without delay”, to invite the leaders of the “five” to such a dialogue. China and France supported Putin’s proposal.
The conference in Munich takes place from February 14 to 16. It is attended by over 800 delegates, including about 150 heads of state, prime ministers and members of governments. The Russian delegation is led by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
