The migration crisis drove the Greeks to despair. In an attempt to keep refugees on the islands of the Aegean, the Greek authorities decided to build additional camps for migrants there.
This approach greatly disappointed the people of Lesbos, Chios and Samos. Together with representatives of local authorities, they went to Athens, where they launched a large-scale action near the building of the Ministry of the Interior.
It was in the Ministry of Internal Affairs earlier that they demanded to find additional territories on the islands for the construction of camps. This is despite the fact that on some islands the number of migrants has already exceeded the number of local residents.
The governor of the northern Aegean islands, Konstantinos Mutsuris, has already stated that the local leadership will do everything for the country’s government to abandon its scandalous idea.
It is worth noting that this is far from the first protests of the inhabitants of the Greek islands. In January, they demanded that the authorities expedite the transfer of migrants to the mainland. Instead, Athens is considering the prospect of building new institutions on the islands, which will be designed for 20 thousand people. Now about 40 thousand refugees are already on the islands of the Aegean Sea. They are kept in camps, which are designed for only 6.2 thousand people.
