Kazakh President Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev on Monday ordered the dismissal of several officials and police officers after the riots in the south of the country, which resulted in human casualties.
Massive riots occurred on Saturday night in the Kordai district of Zhambyl Oblast in southern Kazakhstan. Ten people were killed and almost 50 rioters detained, according to the latest figures. The arson caused damage to 25 private homes, 31 commercial facilities and 41 cars. The riots were caused by a road conflict, which provocateurs have tried to turn into an inter-ethnic one, the Interior Ministry said.
“In connection with the events in Zhambyl Oblast’s Kordai District, which resulted in human casualties and the destruction of homes and property of citizens, Kazakh President Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev instructed Zhambyl Oblast Akim (head) Askar Myrzakhmetov to relieve Zhambyl Oblast Akim Deputy Akim for Social Affairs Sulushash Kurmanbekov and Kordai District Akim Bolatbek Baitole for serious omissions”, – the website of the Kazakh President said.
In addition, the head of state instructed Interior Minister Yerlan Turgumbayev to relieve Zhambyl Oblast Police Department chief and Korday District Police Department chief from their posts.
