Russia and Mexico share an approach to resolving the political crisis in Venezuela through a dialogue of political forces, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said following a working meeting with Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard in Mexico City.
“With a common position, we spoke with respect to the situation in and around Venezuela. Like Russia, Mexico advocates solving all the problems in this country exclusively through dialogue between the government and the opposition, inclusive dialogue of all political forces”, – Lavrov said.
The Minister added that Russia is interested in the continuation of the Latin American and Caribbean region as an important center for a multipolar world order.
Lavrov’s current visit to Mexico has become the third since his appointment as Russian Foreign Minister (before that he was here in 2005 and 2010).
At the same time, Lavrov’s tour of the region is the second in the last six months; in the summer he already visited Cuba, Brazil, Suriname.
Lavrov’s working trip to Mexico took place in a jubilee year – 130 years ago (December 11, 1890) of diplomatic relations were established between the countries, and the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that negotiations in Mexico City with Foreign Minister Ebrard were designed to intensify both political dialogue and economic cooperation.
After a press conference in Mexico City, Lavrov immediately went to the airport to fly to Caracas, where he will be received by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
