Two largest parties in Kosovo signed an agreement on the formation of a new government: this happened about four months after the extraordinary general elections that took place here. It is reported by Radio Liberty.
The agreement was signed on February 2 by Albin Kurti, leader of the left-wing nationalist party Self-Determination, and Isa Mustafa, chairman of the center-right conservative party, Democratic League of Kosovo.
These parties won the most votes in the extraordinary elections held in Kosovo on October 6.
Coalition negotiations have been blocked for several months due to a dispute over the distribution of government posts.
According to the agreements reached, the government will consist of 15 ministers, “Self-determination” and “Kosovo Democratic League” will appoint six ministers each. The remaining three posts will be occupied by ethnic minorities.
The need for an election arose after Kosovo’s Prime Minister Ramush Haradinai resigned in July due to his summoning as a suspect in a special court in The Hague to consider crimes committed during the Kosovo war in 1998-1999. Haradinay declared his innocence, but emphasized that he could not go to court while being the Prime Minister.
Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008.
