At least 39 people died in a terrorist attack in northern Burkina Faso, according to a Government communiqué published on the Faso website.
According to the communiqué, the attack took place on 25 January in the village of Silgaji in Sum Province.
“Operations carried out by the defence and security forces in the area resulted in the death of 39 of our fellow citizens as a result of this cowardly and barbaric attack”, – the communiqué reads.
The Government expressed its condolences to the families of the victims.
Since August 2014, the Barkhane military operation has been conducted in the countries of the Sahara and Sahel region (Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Chad and Burkina Faso) with the participation of France against militants of the extremist group Boko Haram, which has sworn allegiance to the “Islamic State”.
