Bolivia held presidential elections on 20 October 2019. According to the Supreme Electoral Court, Morales received the majority of votes. Carlos Mesa, his main rival, stated that he would not recognize the victory of his opponent in the first round. Following the announcement of the results of the will, Morales’ opponents organized protests and riots began in the country.
After three weeks of protests, Morales left his post, describing the situation as a coup d’état. The second vice-speaker of the Chamber of Senators, Janine Agnès, representing the opposition, took over from the President before the new elections. The new vote is scheduled for May 3.
