Merkel commented on possible EU accession for Tirana and Skopje

At the EU summit in March, Berlin wants to reach consensus on starting accession talks with Albania and Northern Macedonia, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said before starting talks with Albanian Prime Minister and Minister for European and Foreign Affairs Edi Rama.


“We unequivocally support the European perspectives of Albania and all Western Balkan states. We want these states to join the EU. First of all, we want us to reach unanimity at the upcoming EU Council in March on the beginning of accession negotiations with Albania, as well as with Northern Macedonia”, –  Merkel told journalists.

According to Merkel, both countries have made significant progress towards the start of EU accession negotiations. Germany intends to “work hard to achieve the desired results in March”,  – she added.
