Iran has threatened to withdraw from the NPT

Tehran will withdraw from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) if the issue of Iran’s nuclear program is submitted for discussion in the UN Security Council, Press TV reported with reference to Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif.

In May, Press TV reported on the possibility of the country’s withdrawal from the NPT, citing sources close to the office of the Iranian President.
In early January 2020, Iran announced the lifting of “the last key limitation on the nuclear deal regarding the number of centrifuges”, and stated that “there are now no restrictions on Iran’s nuclear programme. At the same time, Tehran intends to continue to cooperate with IAEA as before and is ready to return to its obligations in case of lifting sanctions and safeguarding the interests of the Islamic Republic as stipulated in the nuclear deal. Germany, France and the United Kingdom have announced the launch of a mechanism to resolve disputes within the framework of the nuclear deal with Iran due to Tehran’s refusal to fulfill some of its obligations under the document.
