Shortly before his visit to Russia, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas called for diplomatic efforts to resolve the situation in Libya.
Maas said Russia plays a crucial role in resolving crises in the Middle East and Ukraine. Maas, who will accompany Chancellor Angela Merkel during her visit to Moscow on Saturday, called for diplomatic efforts to resolve the situation in Libya.
“To do this, we need to seat the states that have influence there, especially Russia, at the negotiating table. We also need to talk with Moscow, one of the parties to the Iranian nuclear deal, about how to maintain these agreements and avoid a new escalation in the Persian Gulf. We will also focus on how we can make progress in implementing the Minsk Agreements for the benefit of peace in eastern Ukraine and, of course, in Syria. In a word, we need a dialogue with Russia to resolve crises in the neighborhood, ” said Maas.
According to the minister, the US-Iran conflict complicates the situation in Iraq, Lebanon, Syria and Yemen.
