Residents of Australia have protested the fires

Supporters of the climate change movement have gone out to protest. In Sydney alone, 20,000 people are protesting.


Thousands of people are protesting in Australia over the country’s raging forest fires, 9News TV reported on Friday, January 10.

In the business district of Sydney alone, about 20,000 people protested, their route running from the city hall to the parliament building. The protests are organized by student activists and the Extinction Rebellion movement.

According to 7News, participants are demanding the resignation of Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison because they believe that he has not paid due attention to climate issues and is not coping with the situation in the country. Activists are also calling for a transition to new, more environmentally friendly fuels.

There are protests in other cities as well. For example, in Adelaide, South Australia, activists have blocked traffic on several streets in the business district. Melbourne has also joined the action.

It has also become known that more than A$ 190 million ($131 million) has been raised to help those affected by forest fires. More than half a million people took part in various actions on fund raising. The fund based by comedy actress Celeste Barber, has collected almost $50 million for a week which, as have told in press-service NSWRFS, will be spent including on premium payments to volunteers.
Billionaire Andrew Forrest donated A$70 million ($48 million) to rebuild burned infrastructure and create a national strategy to better cope with natural disasters and the effects of global warming. Paul Ramsay’s fund allocated A$30 million, large Australian banks contributed A$5 million each. Another A$4.3 million ($3 million) was donated by the Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio. Singer and composer Elton John donated $1 million to an Australian disaster relief fund.

Donators include actors Chris Hemsworth and Nicole Kidman, singer and composer Kylie Minogue, rock band Metallica and many others.

Meanwhile, according to media reports, two major forest fires on the border of the states of New South Wales and Victoria are expected to unite on Friday.

Recall that as a result of large-scale fires in Australia have burned out millions of hectares of land. In recent months, the fire took the lives of more than 20 people and destroyed thousands of homes.

According to environmentalists, over a billion animals have died.
