Media: US did not grant visa to Iranian Foreign Minister who wanted to come to UN Security Council

The U.S. has not issued a visa to Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Reuters reported, citing an unnamed U.S. official.

Zarif was scheduled to attend the UN Security Council meeting on Thursday, the agency said.

The U.S., as the host country of the UN, is obliged to grant visas to all diplomats of the member countries of the world organization, although it is periodically neglected.

In the past Zarif received an American visa to participate in UN events, but his movements were strictly controlled.

In early January, the U.S. conducted an operation in Iraq to eliminate high-level Iranian General Kassem Suleimani. Zarif, like other senior Iranian officials, condemned U.S. actions. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei promised Washington retaliation for killing Suleimani.
