Amid the escalation of tension in the Middle East, Georgia is resolving the issue of the legal foundations of the military presence of the North Atlantic Alliance in the country’s ports.

Thus, the Georgian government will have to approve the procedure for issuing permits for entry and raid of vessels flying the flag of NATO in the territorial waters of the country until March 26, 2020. An amendment to the Law “On the Sea Space of Georgia” was also introduced.
“Prior permission is required for foreign vessels to enter ports and raids in Georgia’s internal sea waters 30 days before arrival, with the exception of cases provided for by Georgian legislation”, – the new version of Article 11 says.
According to the Law “On the State Border of Georgia”, a foreign warship must request through the diplomatic channels from the Prime Minister of Georgia entry into Georgian ports and inland waters no later than one month in advance. The Ministry of the Interior will review the application within one week and submit an opinion to the Prime Minister of Georgia, who will make a decision within two weeks.
