Al-Shabab militants attacked a US naval base in the Kenyan Lamu district on the Indian Ocean, the Daily Nation reports citing a local government official.
District Commissioner Irungu Macharia told the publication that heavily armed terrorists invaded the camp early Sunday morning and opened fire. At the same time, local residents told Nation that the shootout had stopped by the time the information began to spread in the media.
“It’s true. Al-Shabab alleged militants attacked the Manda Mahogoni naval base. Kenyan defense forces deal with criminals who invaded the camp today at 4.00”, – Macharia told the newspaper.
The publication also reports that the aircraft of the armed forces of Kenya responded with “several bombs” to this attack. Al-Shabab militants reportedly arrived from the Hindi community in the area, and turned off the power before the attack. Hindi is still de-energized.
Macharia told France Presse that the attack was repelled. About the dead and injured is not reported.
In turn, the local television station Citizen TV Kenya reported with reference to the police that the militants attacked the Camp Simba base (Camp Simba), which is used by the American and Kenyan military. It is located in Manda Bay in Lamu County.
In Somalia, the radical Islamist group Al-Shabab (the “Movement of Young Mujahideen”), which has close ties with the international terrorist organization Al-Qaeda*, is based. It wages an armed struggle against the central government of Somalia and impedes the humanitarian activities of the UN.
