Spanish Coast Guard saves about 300 migrants in the Mediterranean

Fewer and fewer migrants enter European countries. But on December 26, the Spanish coast guard saved 300 people who tried to get to Europe by boat.

More than half of the migrants rescued on Thursday were transported to the Costa Blanca. Another 39 people landed on the beach in Punta Jandia in the Canary Islands of Fuerteventura. The largest rescue operation began on Wednesday at the Moroccan archipelago of Zaffarin and the small Spanish island of Alboran.

Spain is one of the main countries where refugees and migrants come who hope for a better life in Europe.

The total number of migrants arriving in Europe via the Mediterranean route declined again in 2019.

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reported that in 2018, 141,472 migrants arrived, and by December 23 this year, 122,624 people from Turkey, Libya and other African countries were transported to Europe.
