Brussels claims to have sought to ensure that Nord Stream-2 works transparently and also says it does not support sanctions against legitimate business.
The European Commission reacted with caution to the US sanctions against companies involved in the construction of Nord Stream-2. This was reported by DW on Saturday, 21 December.
The European Union is currently studying the potential impact of sanctions on European companies, said in Brussels.
“The EU in principle does not support sanctions against European companies, engaged in legitimate business,” said an unnamed source in the European Commission.
It is noted that the goal of the European Union has always been to ensure that Nord Stream-2 operates in a transparent, “non-discriminatory manner” and is under proper supervision.
On the eve, U.S. President Donald Trump signed the 2020 budget, which includes sanctions against Nord Stream 2 and Turkish Stream. According to the U.S. Treasury Department, the sanctions have already entered into force.
Earlier it became known that the pipe-layer of Nord Stream 2, Allseas Company, said it was suspending the construction of the pipeline due to sanctions against the project builders.
