Despite the fact that private companies involved in the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline actually provided Germany with energy leadership in the European Union, Berlin will not take countermeasures against US sanctions.
This statement was made by the representative of the German government for transatlantic cooperation, a member of the ruling Christian Democratic Union, Peter Bayer.
According to him, Berlin will not dare to enter into conflict with Washington, since it is a question of sanctions against private business, not the state. Moreover, if it came to counter-sanctions, they would be accepted at the level of the European Union.
“Germany will not take retaliatory measures, and if they were taken, it would be at EU level. You shouldn’t count on this either”, – the official said, noting that Washington was threatened with sanctions against Nord Stream-2 throughout the year, because the situation can hardly be called unexpected and even more critical.
As News Front previously reported, President Donald Trump signed the military budget passed by Congress, along with which sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 and Turkish Stream projects were dragged. Germany has already stated that they “took note” of Washington’s decision. At the same time, Ankara made it clear on the eve that it was ready to introduce retaliatory measures against the United States.
