US plans to allocate $ 1 billion for energy independence of Eastern Europe

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill that provides $ 1 billion to support energy projects in Eastern Europe and Eurasia to reduce the region’s dependence on Russian oil and gas. It is reported by Radio Liberty.

Legislative changes were approved by the House of Representatives on December 17 as part of the $ 1.4 trillion spending bill, which is expected to be passed later this week by the Senate and signed by President Donald Trump.

The United States accuses Russia of using oil and gas resources to keep neighbors dependent on energy supplies within its sphere of influence. Many countries in Eastern Europe receive most of their energy imports directly or indirectly from Russia.

Washington is trying to partially solve this problem by allocating $ 1 billion, which can be used to finance strategic energy projects in the region, such as terminals for liquefied natural gas (LNG), gas pipelines, as well as for the production of solar and wind energy.
