Students demand the repeal of what they consider to be an unfair citizenship law.
Students from 36 major universities in India are protesting against the new citizenship law. This is reported by The Times of India on Tuesday.
According to the newspaper, students of such universities as Bombay Indian Institute of Technology in Mumbai, Madras Institute of Technology in Chennai, universities in Lucknow, Benares, Cochin, Calcutta are protesting. Classes in many of them have been suspended.
Students demand the repeal of what they consider an unjust citizenship law and express solidarity with students at Jamiyah Milliya Islamia University in New Delhi and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Aligarh (Uttar Pradesh), which were closed on Monday until January 5 after university students organized a riotous mass protest.
Earlier, the newspaper reported, citing police sources, that more than 50 people were injured and injured during the riots and clashes between students and the police, which continued in several areas of New Delhi on Sunday night and Monday night. The main disturbances were noted in the area of Jamiyah Milliya Islamiah University. Clashes also occurred in Aligarh, where, according to PTI, 10 police officers and about 30 students were injured.
