Serbian Prime Minister: no parliamentary elections next spring

Parliamentary elections in Serbia will be held as late as possible, but at the same time as provided for by the country’s constitution. This was announced on December 14 by the Prime Minister of Serbia Ana Brnabic. She told the reporters that this was her personal request to the country’s President, Alexander Vuchich.

“I can say that the President was against it, but since we work in a team and he trusts his team, he answered my request positively. Although for the Serbian Progressive Party (the ruling party led by President Vučić – Ed.) it would be better if the elections were held as soon as possible”, – Brnabić quoted RTS television as saying at a press conference in the Serbian government.

According to the Prime Minister, in this way, President Vučić satisfied the demands of not only part of the opposition parties, but also representatives of the European Parliament, who mediate negotiations between the Serbian authorities and the opposition on the issue of reaching an agreement on the conditions for the elections.

Answering journalists’ question, is it possible to expect that the elections will be held in accordance with the requirements of the opposition – nine months later than the initial date in March 2020, Brnabich stated that the deadline for the elections is determined by the constitution and laws of the country.

“I asked the President to postpone the election as much as possible, because I think this is the only way to prove that we have no problems about this and we can provide the opposition with extra time to present its program to the citizens. I think it’s honest, although they had four years to do it”, – Brnabić said.

In Serbia, for more than a year every Saturday there have been protest marches of opposition parties that are members of the Union for Serbia association. This opposition group announced a boycott of the next parliamentary elections in Serbia due to a media blockade imposed by the authorities. According to the leaders of parties belonging to the Union for Serbia, equal conditions must first be created in the country for holding elections and introducing an election campaign.
