Political scientist explained why US decision on Russia and G7 means nothing

The US Congress passed a resolution against the return of Russia to the G7 format. On the air of Radio Sputnik, political analyst Aleksey Fenenko called this decision purely political.

The House of Representatives of the US Congress does not approve of a possible invitation to Russia to the G7 summits. This is enshrined in the adopted resolution, reports The Hill.

According to the publication, the document enshrines the support of the United States of Ukraine. It also claims that “the Kremlin is threatening democratic societies around the world, including the United States and other G7 countries”.

Congressmen are urging G7 leaders to oppose Russia’s return to the group until it ends its “attack on democracy”.

The resolution received 339 votes in favor and 71 against. The document is recommendatory in nature. Previously, it was approved by the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

The comment is given by the associate professor of world politics at Moscow State University. Lomonosov, Doctor of Political Sciences Aleksey Fenenko expressed the opinion that this resolution does not make sense.

“This is a purely political action. Firstly, Russia is not participating in this format anyway. Secondly, there is no decision to accept or accept states in the G7. Thirdly, it is simply a demonstration that the United States is against Russia and its return to this club. But Russia, in general, does not seek to get into this club. Therefore, this resolution is a demonstration that the United States intends to continue to pursue an unfriendly policy towards Russia”, – said Alexey Fenenko.

The G7 includes Germany, the USA, Canada, Japan, France, the UK and Italy. In 1998, the format expanded at the expense of Russia, but after the return of Crimea to the Russian Federation, club members refused to come to the summit in Sochi, and instead gathered in Brussels in full measure.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly noted that Russia is ready to cooperate in any format, but now the G8 does not exist. He noted that returning to the previous format for Russia is not an end in itself, but the leadership will not refuse contacts.
