Afghans and migrants from Arab states staged a massacre in a crowded refugee camp on the Greek island of Chios. The police tried to put an end to this. Three people were seriously injured.
In a crowded migration camp on the Greek island of Chios, three people were seriously injured as a result of fierce clashes between migrants. Migrants of different ethnic backgrounds started stoning at each other on Sunday evening. This then led to fierce fighting, the semi-official news agency ANA-MPA (Athens-Macedonian News Agency) reported on Monday. The police were able to stop the riots, using all their forces on the island. One policeman was also injured. According to official figures, more than 5,000 people are in the Chios camp, which is designed for 1000 migrants.
The Athens government plans to deliver more than 10,000 migrants to the mainland over the next two months. Since July, some 10,000 migrants have been brought from islands in the east of the Aegean to camps in northern and central Greece.
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, as of November 24, 52,719 migrants from Turkey were sent to the Greek islands. This is 20,000 more than for the entire previous year (32,494). Athens has repeatedly called on the Turkish government to stop the influx of refugees.
