Six people were detained during a protest outside the National Library in central Tbilisi, Georgian Interior Ministry officials told reporters on Friday.
“Six people were detained for disobedience to the police and petty hooliganism”, – the Interior Ministry said.
Among the detainees is Lasha Chkhartishvili, a member of the Labor Party.
Oppositionists and their supporters began a rally at the National Library after a small protest rally by parliament. The library hosted an event dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, attended by Minister of Justice Thea Tsulukiani.
Protests began in Georgia after parliament failed to pass constitutional amendments to amend the electoral system, in particular, the transition to proportional elections in 2020. The opposition puts forward various demands, from the appointment of early proportional elections to the adoption of new electoral models.
