British Foreign Minister considers Hong Kong elections a chance to overcome crisis

British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab believes that the elections held in Hong Kong provide an opportunity to overcome the political crisis.

On Sunday, Hong Kong held direct elections to the councils of 18 urban districts, candidates fought for 452 seats. The councils deal with local issues, such as transport and utilities. After counting 98% of the vote, supporters of the democratic opposition get an absolute majority of 344 seats, the pro-government bloc secures only 58 seats, and independent candidates get 41 seats. Hong Kong administration head Carrie Lam said authorities respect the election results. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said the central government fully supports the head of the Hong Kong administration.
