The Georgian authorities should pay particular attention to the issues of “processing” national minorities living in the country, whose position does not correspond to the pro-Western course.
This statement was made by the head of the local office of the American non-governmental organization National Democratic Institute of International Relations Laura Thornton, commenting on the “unfavorable” results of sociological research.
As it turned out, 62% of Azerbaijanis living in the country and 49% of Armenians are opposed to granting Georgia membership in the North Atlantic Alliance. At the same time, respondents explain their position by the fact that because of this, the situation in the country is not improving, in particular, the unemployment rate remains high.
At the same time, according to the survey, only 43% of Azerbaijanis and 53% of Armenians are against normalization of relations with Russia. Moreover, only a tenth of the interrogated representatives of national minorities believe in the presence of a “Russian threat”.
“Representatives of the Armenian and Azerbaijani minorities in Georgia need to be convinced and do everything to change their position exactly the opposite”, – Laura Thornton commented on the situation.
