According to The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post, the Federal Bureau of Investigation “made mistakes”.
“Mistake” refers to the fact that an FBI lawyer named Kevin Klinsmith changed the text of the e-mail, which was used as the basis for the request to extend the surveillance of then adviser of Donald Trump, Carter Page. Klinsmith made some additions to the letter before handing it over to the employees who were involved in obtaining the warrant.
Forgery of documents occurred in 2016. However, Klinsmith was removed from the investigation only two years later, but not because of a falsified letter. The Attorney General of the Ministry of Justice found out that Klinsmith was among several FBI officers who expressed dislike for Trump in correspondence. Among other things, Clinsmith wrote “Viva le resistance” in personal correspondence and lamented that he had not done enough to prevent Trump from winning.
