Politico: US plans to conduct new trade investigation against EU

The US administration is considering the possibility of starting a new trade investigation against the European Union amid the fact that the head of the White House, Donald Trump, has not yet introduced duties on European cars.

Previously, it was assumed that measures against the automobile industry of the EU will be introduced by November 14 or postponed for six months. Thus, the publication notes, imported cars and spare parts will no longer be regarded as a threat to national interests, but goods from the European Union will come under a broader investigation. “This will create a situation that will give the president leverage over the EU,” the source said.
The publication doubts that the head of the White House will resort to article 232 of the American law of 1962, which allows duties to adjust imports of goods from other states, based on national interests.

“An investigation under article 301 of the 1974 law on trade will potentially be much wider and affect a large number of industries”, –  the publication said.

Recall, the EU warned the United States of the losses from the introduction of duties.
