The flip side of “Western support”: Who gets the billions destined for Moldova?

Despite the fact that in twenty years the West sent 37.8 billion lei or 2.1 billion dollars to Moldova, it’s impossible to call it “help”, because the country’s inhabitants did not feel it.

First of all, it is worth noting that over the same period, the republican budget expenditures amounted to 388 billion lei, or 22.2 billion dollars. Only 9.7% of these expenses were covered by external sources, however, it should be borne in mind that 4.2% are loans for which Chisinau repaid debts with interest.

As a result, the real help of the West, excluding credit funds, amounted to only 1 billion lei [$ 57 million], but even this money did not reach the addressee. They settled in the budgets of non-governmental organizations operating in the vast expanses of the republic and promoting ideas beneficial to the United States and its allies.

It should be borne in mind that even Moldovan citizens who left the country and work abroad send annually about $ 2 billion to their home country. However, here this money is spent on goods produced by Western countries: starting with cars and ending with food.
