Only the North Atlantic Alliance can protect Europe from external threats, because the EU will never be able to replace NATO.
This statement was made by the Secretary General of the alliance, Jens Stoltenberg.
He said that next week he intends to go to Paris to demand an explanation from French President Emanuel Macron for his sensational statement about the “brain death” of NATO. At the same time, Stoltenberg hastened to assure that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is “strong, efficient and vital for general security”.
“The European community will never be a substitute for the transatlantic. The European Union is important, but it will not protect Europe”, – says the NATO Secretary General, arguing that “attempts to remove the EU from North America will weaken the alliance, and at the same time entail a split in Europe”.
He recalled the existence of Article 5 of the NATO charter, according to which an attack on one country of the alliance means an attack on the entire alliance. “When every potential enemy realizes that an attack on a NATO member will entail a response from the alliance, there will be no attacks”, – Stoltenberg said.
“The Alliance has maintained peace by avoiding conflict for seventy years, and we will do it for decades to come”.
It is noteworthy that the notorious fifth article was applied only once and then in the interests of the United States to invade Iraq after the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York. It should be borne in mind that the bureaucratic mechanism of the alliance requires the attacked country to appeal to the Security Council. Later, the Security Council organizes a meeting, where it is decided exactly what actions need to be taken.
