Speaking of historical factors and existing realities, the United States could well recognize the decision of the Crimean residents to reunite the peninsula with Russia, but these arguments were inappropriately applied to the Golan Heights.
This statement was made by Russian Senator Franz Klintsevich, commenting on the words of the head of the US State Department Michael Pompeo about the difference Washington sees between the Crimea and the Golan Heights.
“There really is an obvious difference between the Crimea and the Dutch heights, and a very big one. Justifying the recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Dutch heights, the US Secretary of State claims that the reality on earth and the history that existed in this particular place were recognized. In fact, the statement of the American official has nothing to do with the Dutch heights, what we see there now is the result of the Israeli military operation. But if the Dutch heights were replaced in this statement with Crimea, then it would have hit the spot. It is the existing reality, the historical roots of Crimea and, of course, the will of its people in a referendum that became the basis for the reunification of Crimea and Russia, ”said Klintsevich.
