Chilean authorities and opposition agree on constitutional referendum

The authorities and the opposition of Chile were able to agree to hold a referendum in the country on the new constitution in April 2020.

According to the publication Tercera.

Reportedly, after lengthy negotiations on Thursday night, the head of the Chilean Senate, Jaime Quintana, announced a historic agreement between the country’s ruling parties and the opposition aimed at replacing the constitution that has existed since 1981 and is called “For Public Peace and the New Constitution”.

“This night is historic for Chile”, –  Quintana said.

He noted that this is about “a peaceful and democratic way out of the crisis” and “the victory of all citizens”. According to the publication, the first of 12 points of the agreement indicates the restoration of public order in the country. According to the publication, a two-page document was adopted 28 days after the outbreak of unrest in the country.
The reason for the start of mass protests in Chile was the increase in metro fares in early October. However, this is only one of the reasons. Residents are opposed to the inability to get a decent free education and health services, low salaries and rising tariffs.
