Tbilisi begins protest after failure of constitutional amendments

Representatives of various non-governmental organizations, opposition, their supporters and ordinary citizens of Georgia began protests by blocking the central avenue of Rustaveli after the country’s parliament failed to approve constitutional amendments to switch from a mixed electoral system to a proportional one.

The Parliament of Georgia was previously unable to accept amendments to the constitution, implying a transition from a mixed system of parliamentary elections to the proportional one.

“Bidzina Ivanishvili deceived the Georgian people, he promised to hold proportional elections, which were supposed to be fair and democratic. What we saw in the Parliament today is a production, performance, show. Protests began that will gain serious momentum”, – the reporters were told.
