Democratic senator Zhannin Agnes on Tuesday (Wednesday night Moscow time) took over the powers of the interim head of the Bolivian state, according to the Tiempos Bolivian newspaper’s online portal.
“After the resignation of President Evo Morales, Vice President Alvaro Garcia, Chairman of the Senate (upper house of parliament) Adriana Salvierra and Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies (lower house of parliament) Victor Borda, Agnes, according to the constitution of Bolivia, was the first in line from those who can take mandate to lead the state, “the newspaper writes.
Agnes served as second deputy chairman of the Senate.
“I will immediately take over the powers of the president of the state,” she said from the rostrum of the Bolivian parliament.
At the same time, Bolivian television clarifies that there were no deputies – supporters of Evo Morales in the hall, despite the fact that they constitute two-thirds of the deputy corps, and without their presence it was impossible to provide the necessary quorum for legalizing the resignation of Evo Morales.
Agnes now has a duty to announce early presidential and general elections, as well as the formation of interim authorities.
Earlier it was reported that deputies from the “Movement to Socialism” Evo Morales refused to participate in an extraordinary meeting of parliament.
Bolivian President Evo Morales, and then the entire country’s top leadership, announced their resignation on Sunday, after 19 days of protests and a political crisis that began in the country after the October 20 presidential election, which revealed and confirmed fraud.
