Air conditioning, escalators and office heating have become a real luxury for the United Nations, which is facing a serious financial crisis.
This is stated in the publication of the German edition of Focus Online.
In the article, the position of the largest international structure is called the “dramatic monetary problem”, which forces its administration to take drastic measures. So, at the UN headquarters in New York they already save on electricity. In this regard, escalators were disabled here, which allows, according to media reports, to save 38 dollars a day. The situation is no better in the Geneva office of the environmental protection system, where management ordered to limit the operation of heating and air conditioning.
Business meetings at late hours have also been banned, and travel is allowed when absolutely necessary. Staff at the UN are also no longer recruited.
While these solutions seem small, they clearly demonstrate the organization’s biggest problem – lack of funding. The reason for this was the debts of States that are in no hurry to pay an annual fee. Now the UN is short of 1.18 billion dollars. It is noteworthy that among the debtors are the United States, which appeared in the same list with Israel, Iran, Brazil, Argentina and 54 other debtor countries. Moreover, as noted in the media, Washington owes hundreds of millions of dollars not only for the current, but also for the past year.
