On Friday, November 8, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made a statement that the NATO system should grow and change, since there is a risk of its obsolescence. Recall that earlier French President Emmanuel Macron said that the alliance is experiencing a “brain death”.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel in an interview with the British weekly newspaper The Economist commented on Macron’s expression as “radical”.
Following Pompeo’s Berlin speech on Friday, he was asked about the current state of the NATO system.
“Seventy years later, she needs to grow and change”, – he replied.
“It is necessary to confront today’s realities and the challenges of today”.
“If countries believe that they can gain security benefits without providing NATO with the necessary resources, if they do not fulfill their obligations, there is a risk that NATO will soon become an inefficient and obsolete structure”, – he said.
