The United States has introduced various restrictive measures against Moscow in recent years, but it still has not been able to get rid of its dependence on Russian RD-180 rocket engines, writes National Interest.
It is noted that space is of particular importance for the US military, intelligence and the country’s economy, however, most residents of the United States do not suspect that the country’s air force launches objects important in terms of national security in space using missiles equipped with Russian engines.
However, by December 31, 2022, the US Air Force would be required by law to stop using the RD-180. According to the magazine, Congress wisely acted, deciding to replace them with American counterparts in order to get rid of the “dangerous dependence on the enemy”.
At the same time, according to the publication, two suppliers of American-made launch vehicles are already being selected, but this is a very important decision, since it will affect national security and space launches. The United States is expected to continue to use Russian engines until at least 2024, and even longer. So, the concept of an “alternative medium” may be introduced into the law if the American is not ready by 2022, and the only alternative is Russian-made engines.
The publication stresses that Washington should not be allowed a delay, since further delay allegedly strengthens Moscow’s position and undermines US national security.
