More than 1,600 victims of protests are in hospitals in Chile

The Chilean National Institute of Human Rights updated the data on victims and detainees during the protests in the country: after almost three weeks of riots in hospitals, 1,659 people were hospitalized, more than half of them with gunshot wounds.

“The numbers were collected directly by the National Institute of Human Rights during the monitoring of demonstrations, police stations and medical centers from October 17 to 12:00 p.m. on November 4, 2019”, –  the human rights defenders said in an explanation to the table with the data.

According to the Institute, 849 injured in hospitals have gunshot wounds, 160 people have eye injuries.
According to human rights activists, 4,364 people were detained for participating in the riots, including 670 women and 479 minors.

According to authorities, 19 people were killed during the clashes, including five members of the law enforcement and defense forces. Chilean President Sebastian Pinera, amid ongoing protests in the country, replaced key government ministers, including the Minister of the Interior.

On October 27, Chilean authorities lifted a state of emergency imposed due to unrest. The reason for the start of mass protests in Chile, which often turned into pogroms, was the increase in metro fares in early October. However, this is only one of the reasons. Residents are opposed to the inability to get a decent free education and health services, low salaries and rising tariffs.
