Scotland’s first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, will submit a request for a new independence referendum to London by the end of the year. She is worried about the possible victory of the conservatives in the early parliamentary elections.
In the Scottish city of Glasgow on Saturday, November 2, there was a massive demonstration for independence from Britain. The organizers estimated the number of participants at 20 thousand people. Many brought national flags with them. Among the demonstrators was the first Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, who for the first time in several years came out for such an action.
The victory of the Conservative Party of Great Britain in the early parliamentary elections on December 12 means that Scotland “will be torn out of the family of European states against its will”, – Sturgeon said. She called for “taking the future into our own hands and becoming an independent country”.
In early October, the first Minister of Scotland accused British Prime Minister Boris Johnson of intending to carry out the Brexit without an agreement with the European Union, which contradicts the will of the Scottish voters. Sturgeon said she would hold another referendum on Scottish independence in the next two years. In anticipation of the Saturday demonstration, the first Minister of Scotland announced that she would send a request to London to hold it before Catholic Christmas.
During the referendum in 2014, 55 percent of Scots supported a continued stay in the United Kingdom. In the summer of 2016, on a Brexit plebiscite, 62 percent of Scotland people called for further EU membership.
