Student protests in Athens escalated into massive brawls with police

In the center of the Greek capital, there were massive clashes between students and the police.

During a student demonstration, police used tear gas and special equipment. Extra-parliamentary left parties took responsibility for the protests. The protests are related to the adoption of new laws in relation to higher education institutions.

The essence of legislative changes is the abolition of the so-called “university asylum”, which had previously forbidden the Greek police to enter the territory of universities, except with the permission of the university administration or the leadership, even in the case of serious crimes. Thus, university campuses have become a shelter for numerous criminals: drug dealers and smugglers.

The protesters passed from the building of the University of Athens to the central square of the city. A group of protesters tried to break through the police cordon to the parliament entrance, throwing stones and Molotov cocktails at law enforcement officers. In response, police used tear gas and stun grenades.
