The first meeting of the constitutional Committee of Syria began in Geneva.

According to the procedure, the special envoy of the UN Secretary General for Syria Geir Pedersen opens the meeting. Then the two co – chairs will take the floor: first, the head of the Damascus delegation, Ahmad Kuzbari, will speak, followed by the head of the opposition delegation, Hadi al-bahra. After that, the meeting will continue behind closed doors.

As the representative of the delegation of the Syrian opposition Abdulhakim Bashar told RIA Novosti, the main work of the constitutional committee will begin on Monday, November 4, as part of a small group of 45 people, before that, delegations will discuss organizational issues.

The official approval of the lists of committee members occurred only at the end of September. The Committee consists of three equal parts – 50 representatives from the opposition, government and civil society. The expanded composition of the committee includes 150 people, 50 from each group, and by a majority of votes will adopt constitutional drafts, which will be prepared by a small committee of 45 people.

The members of the small committee were appointed from among the corresponding parts of the large composition, 15 people from each group. A large body can be convened in parallel or periodically as the work of a small body moves forward to discuss and accept proposals.

The main goal of the committee is to prepare constitutional reform in Syria in order to conduct elections in the country on its basis, initiating the process of political settlement in the Arab Republic.
